Structure Fire

3/29/09 Working kitchen fire with extension to one other room on the first floor. Fire was venting out of two rooms from the rear upon arrival. Two lines went through the front door and pushed the fire out the back of the house. Units were on scene for two hours and were released after salvage and overhaul.

Another Haz-Mat Incident at Kerite

03/27/09:  More than one hundred workers were evacuated from the Kerite Company in Seymour Friday after a bad batch of powdered peroxide caught fire. The smoldering pallet of burning chemical was pushed outside with a forklift by an alert worker. Fire crews carefully put water on the fire to contain the organic peroxide cloud. This is the second such fire at Kerite in as many weeks. The incident closed a section of Route 67 and an exit ramp off Route 8. E-11,R-12,E-13,T-14,E-16,R-17, were on scene for a little over three hours. DEP remained on scene with clean up crews. Oxford Fire was called into cover at C2 and their rescue was asked to come right to the scene. After clearing, E-13 was called back to stand by as DEP removed the rest of the peroxides out of the building. They were on scene for hours after the first tone stuck. While the rest of the company ran around town with a car fire, and a MVA. Very busy day in the town of Seymour

Third Haz-Mat of the Night

3/16/09: Toned out for a possible HazMat spill with a tractor trailer involved. Upon arrival we found a tractor trailer with a empty 5,000 gallon tank that had become separated from it's chaise. The tank was empty. There was no hazards. We waited on scene for a heavy duty wrecker. All units were cleared per command. Units remained on scene for a little over an hour. With all these alarms it made for a busy night into the following day.

Haz-Mat with Fire

3/16/09: At 21:45 hours we were toned out for a Hazmat spill with a possible chemical fire at the Kerite Company. Upon arrival we found a heavy smoke condition throughout the Day Street area and extending towards Route 8. An employee had towed the chemical outside and left it in its container. A smoke condition existed in the building from the chemical off-gassing. DEP was called in for assistance. Several employees were treated on scene and did not require any transport. We cleared at approximately 01:30 hours after determining the chemical needed to cool down on its own. The DEP and Haz-mat Team remained on scene. Units on scene for this alarm were: E-11, R-12, E-13, H-7, E-15, E-16 and R-17. Oxford Fire was also standing by at Citizens for in-town coverage.

We were later called back to the same location at 02:00 hours by the DEP. The chemical had reached its flash point and ignited a fire which produced a large yellow flame. An attack was made with a 1-3/4" hand line and the flames were smothered. We remained on scene until 03:30 hours with E-11, R-12, E-13, H-7, E-16 and the DEP and Hazmat Teams. It was determined that the chemical did not pose a hazard to the environment.

Car vs. Bus

03/02/09: At around 9 a.m. the Seymour Fire Dept. was dispatched for an MVA. Upon their arrival they found a car head on into a school bus. The car had slid into the bus while trying to stop. The car slid about 40 feet. There were four patients in the car with minor injuries and they were released to family members. The bus was filled with students and there were no injuries reported. The students were moved to another bus and transported to school.  Photos by Ron Burgess.
